Straight from  Adam Cozens' happy good-times joy fun blog comes word that NYC's Comic Strip Live club will host 50 hours of continuous stand-up in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record: Starting on Tuesday June 3rd at 8:30 pm and ending on Thursday, June 5th at 10:30 pm, Comic Strip Live will set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Stand Up Comedy Show. For 50 continuous hours, there will be laughter without end with the country‚Äôs brightest stars shining on stage. Audiences can expect over 100 professional stand up comedians to grace the Comic Strip Live stage. Perhaps more intriguing is that the club is also offering an open invitation to both Dane Cook and Dave Chappelle to one-up each other in their continuing stand-up marathon champ battle. Perhaps Dave's recent surprise set was merely a warm-up, like Joey Chestnut polishing a rack of ribs before the Coney Island hot dog contest?  Regardless of whether or not Dave and/or Dane show up, proceeds from the event will go to support the USO. That means it's for the troops, son. I wonder if forcing Gallagher to smash watermelons at gunpoint for 50 continuous hours qualifies as stand-up, but that is something I would also like to see.

Not satisfied with his recent film oeuvre, Dane Cook kept it on the real by beating Dave Chappelle's December-minted stand-up record Tuesday/Wednesday night at the Laugh Factory. By 48 minutes. As the kids like to say, if you come at the king, you best not miss.* Club owner Jamie Masada quipped, "If this rivalry keeps up I'm going to turn the Laugh Factory into a bed and breakfast." With all due respect Mr. Masada, if it keeps up you're going to make the space an abattoir, because this feud can only end in SLAUGHTER and MADNESS. *Apologies to Omar and the rest of The Wire crew

As covered here before, Dane Cook can attract rabid Springsteen-sized arena crowds, but respect from comedy critics often alludes him. So you might be a little surprised to read an inarguably glowing review of Cook's new record Rough Around the Edges on a stand-up connoisseur website like Punchline Magazine. Sure enough though, reviewer Dylan Gadino seems to love the CD: He also gets hilariously graphic when talking about a website that lists registered sex offenders in your area: “You click on a dot and it shows you a little picture, and then under the picture—stats! Like a rapist baseball card. And if you collect all nine rapists, there’s a puzzle on the back. There’s a rickety van puzzle on the back with a clown holding a glass dildo.” Okay, Dane Cook, you got me. I laughed at that bit. For the complete review have a look at REVIEW: Dane Cook’s Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, here's a clip from the filmed version of RAtE:

With great notoriety comes great scrutiny. No one knows that more than comedian and actor Dane Cook. In recent years, he's catapulted to stardom, releasing some of the best-selling comedy albums in history. But along with the rabid fans who pack arenas for him, Cook has throngs of detractors too. In a new interview with Ohio's The Vindicator, Cook had this to say about his critics: "There is certainly some backlash, but I think some of that understandably just comes with success," said Cook, calling from New York City. "People want to kind of take your legs out from under you when in their eyes, kind of overnight you become this sensation when the truth is I've had this kind of slow but steady trajectory over close to 18 years. "But I will say, controversy I find is good for business. What it's really done is elevated me to a level where, like me or hate me, people are talking to me. And if people are talking to me, people are going to listen to my comedy and judge for themselves. "That's why his arena tour is selling out across the country, because all people really care about is laughter and having a good time. I don't think they care about the superfluous lies and crap that ends up being out there." For more with Cook, read On tour, comedian Cook delivers. According to Variety, Dave Chappelle surprised an audience at LA's Laugh Factory Sunday night by doing an unannounced set that lasted more than a quarter of a day:Chappelle kept telling jokes until 4:43 the next morning--- making his entire set a whopping six hours and seven minutes. That's the longest performance by any comedian in the the 28-year history of the Laugh Factory, according to founder Jamie Masada. Amazingly, the previous record was established just a few days earlier. On April 10, Dane Cook performed his own marathon act, appearing on stage for three hours and fifty minutes. "It was just one of those nights," Masada said of Chappelle's appearance. "He had everyone laughing for six hours." Indeed, Masada said only about a dozen of the 150-plus original members of the audience left the club before Chappelle wrapped his set. "The audience was with him 100 percent," he said. Chappelle didn't take any bathroom breaks. And Laugh Factory staff stopped serving alcohol around midnight, Masada said. For more details on the marathon set, click here. *Apologies to anyone who saw the headline and hoped this would be a post about politically-conscious late-80s Australian alt-rock.

Dane Cook's latest CD/DVD ISolated INcident will be released by Comedy Central Records on May 19, and today we've got a preview. As Dane says, when you have a lot of fans, you also inspire some strong feelings on the other end of the scale. Which is why I'm glad I'm not famous. The meanest emails I ever get just accuse me of "h@v1ng @ $m@ll pen1$," and even those are kind enough to offer a low-cost solution. See Also: Sneak a Peek at Dane Cook's ISolated INcident

Dane Cook's latest CD for Comedy Central Records is called Isolated Incident and will be available on May 19th, but you can get a preview of what's in store with this video he's just posted online. I'd say more, but he's the best-selling stand-up of all-time, so the laws of probability say you don't need any more convincing. In fact, you've probably already clicked "play." You just completely overlooked these words and skipped to the video. Which is fine, I guess, but what if I was revealing the location of a treasure chest? You'd be sorry then.

Comedy has suddenly become an endurance sport. First Dave Chappelle did a six-hour and 12-minute set. Then Dane Cook bested him, staying onstage for seven hours. And now two lesser-known comics are apparently battling to claim the title. I mentioned this briefly Tuesday, but a few more details are now available. A Winnipeg standup named Big Daddy Tazz did an eight-and-a-half-hour standup set earlier this week:He said he decided to break a record set by U.S. comedian Dane Cook who did a 7-hour set at Hollywood's Laugh Factory last December, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., said. However, comedian Robby Wagner gave a 10-hour routine on March 9 at Toso's Sports Grill in Phoenix, an Internet search of news releases showed.Part of Tazz's 88-page set list included references to his own battles with bipolar depression and attention deficit disorder, the Sun said.An anonymous comment below the article takes issue with the mention of Wagner's alleged performance and says Tazz has submitted his claim to Guinness. So who really has the record now? Beats the hell out of me, but I predict David Blaine will soon crush all previous records with a 97-hours standup set from inside a shark-infested underwater volcano... on the Moon!

There's not a lot that's funny about being stationed away from loved ones, but COMEDY CENTRAL hopes to bring some laughter to the troops with the launch of "PVT Jokes," a new military outreach partnership with the USO that delivers comedy kits to forward operating bases (FOBs) as well as U.S. military hospitals at home and overseas. The partnership was announced today by the USO (United Service Organizations, Inc.) and COMEDY CENTRAL. With the goal of reaching more than 200 FOBs and U.S. military hospitals at launch, "PVT Jokes" began distributing kits this week that include CD and DVD donations from COMEDY CENTRAL Records and COMEDY CENTRAL Home Entertainment. Each kit will feature COMEDY CENTRAL DVD titles, including the "COMEDY CENTRAL Roasts" of Flavor Flav, Pamela Anderson and William Shatner, "COMEDY CENTRAL Presents Southern Gents of Comedy" and "Best of COMEDY CENTRAL Presents" stand-up; as well as CDs from comedians including George Lopez, Dane Cook, D.L. Hughley, Norm Macdonald and Harland Williams. More information can be found at http://www.comedycentral.com/pvtjokes/index.jhtml.
